MURPHY, N.C. — The Town of Murphy has been awarded $5,019,828 in Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF) Hurricane Helene funding to support critical wastewater resiliency improvements, strengthening essential infrastructure and preparing the community for future extreme weather events.
The funding was announced by Governor Josh Stein and the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality as part of a broader $215 million investment in drinking water and wastewater systems across the state.
Murphy’s project will focus on enhancing the reliability and resilience of its wastewater system, helping to ensure continued service during emergencies while protecting public health and the environment. The Town’s largest sewer lift station on Payne Street will be rehabilitated, and the force main to the wastewater treatment plant will be replaced. The Town’s emergency telemetry system will also get revamped, as well as upgrades to the sewer system’s emergency generators.
“This investment represents a significant step forward for our community,” said Mayor Tim Radford. “Reliable wastewater infrastructure is essential to protecting our residents, supporting economic growth, and ensuring we are prepared for future storms. We are grateful for the state’s partnership in helping us build a stronger, more resilient Murphy. We are thankful the project is 100% grant funded, taking the burden off our rate payers,” added Radford.
The funding comes in response to widespread infrastructure needs following Hurricane Helene, which caused significant damage across North Carolina. State officials prioritized projects that will rebuild and modernize systems to better withstand future disasters.
Murphy’s award is part of a statewide effort led by the State Water Infrastructure Authority and the Division of Water Infrastructure, which has distributed hundreds of millions of dollars in federal and state funding to communities in need.
