Position Summary
The Town of Murphy Police Department seeks a Police Investigator (Detective) to conduct and support criminal investigations that safeguard our community. This position performs specialized law enforcement work involving investigative assignments, evidence collection, and case development for prosecution.
Primary Duties
• Investigate felony and misdemeanor cases, including homicides, sexual assaults, robberies, burglaries, and narcotics offenses.
• Process and document crime scenes; collect, preserve, and manage physical evidence.
• Conduct interviews and interrogations; obtain and execute search and arrest warrants.
• Perform surveillance and coordinate with other law enforcement agencies.
• Prepare detailed investigative reports, maintain accurate records, and testify in court.
Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED (Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred).
• Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certification from the NC Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
• Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
• Four to five years of law enforcement experience, including at least two years in a detective/investigator capacity (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
