NCDOT Downtown Milling and Resurfacing

Road construction work is set to begin in downtown Murphy on May 17 as crews start milling, paving, pavement marking, and making utility adjustments along U.S. 19 Business. 

•  All operations are scheduled for night work, from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM.
•   Weather events and any unforeseen circumstances could affect the scheduled dates posted below.

  •  May 17, 2026 – Milling Hiwassee St from McDonalds through the roundabout downtown, continuing northbound on Valley River Avenue.
  • May 18, 2026, through May 21, 2026 – Continue Milling on Valley River Avenue from downtown to the bridge North of Thomas St.
  • May 26, 2026, through May 28, 2026 - Milling Tennessee St. from the Murphy School of Dance, through the roundabout, and continuing down Peachtree St to the Murphy Court House.
  • May 26, 2026, Start Paving Hiwassee St from McDonalds through the roundabout downtown, continuing northbound on Valley River Avenue.
  • The paving operations will be close to the same sequence that the milling operations occurred, but only the mainline will be paved the week of May 26, 2026. 
  • Pavement markings, and utility adjustment operations will follow the paving operations. Areas that will need all vehicles removed will be marked during the day before the night operations start and the affected businesses will also be notified as soon as possible in advance.
  • The schedule listed above is a tentative schedule and could change due to weather events. Construction completion times are estimated. Updates will be sent out as soon as possible in advance.
